Meet the Author

Dr. Ophelia McLain is an author, educator, evaluator, and woman of faith whose life and work have been shaped by a desire to help others recognize meaning, growth, and purpose in their journeys.

For more than two decades, she has worked in healthcare and public service.

While Emerging grew from something much more personal: reflection on the ways God develops us throughout the ordinary, difficult, hidden, and unexpected seasons of life.

Her faith, family, teaching, and life experiences continue to shape both her writing and her own emerging journey.

Why I Wrote While Emerging

I wrote While Emerging for the person who has ever wondered, Does my life really matter to God?

There are seasons when purpose seems obvious, but there are also seasons when we wait, struggle, experience disappointment, feel overlooked, or wonder whether anything meaningful is happening at all.

As I reflected on the development of an egg, I began to see a familiar spiritual truth in an unfamiliar way. Every layer has a function. Development takes place before emergence. What is hidden is not necessarily inactive, and what appears broken is not necessarily useless.

While Emerging is not intended to offer a formula for finding purpose or to suggest that we can manufacture our own transformation. Rather, it is an invitation to recognize God’s presence and purpose throughout the process of becoming.
